Low?Level Marine Tropical Clouds in Six CMIP6 Models Are Too Few, Too Bright but Also Too Compact and Too Homogeneous

چکیده

Several studies have shown that most climate models underestimate cloud cover and overestimate reflectivity, particularly for the tropical low-level clouds. Here, we analyze characteristics of marine clouds simulated by six models, which provided COSP output within CMIP6 project. CALIPSO lidar observations PARASOL mono-directional reflectance are used model evaluation. It is found “too few, too bright” bias still present these models. The overestimated when low. Models do not simulate any optically thin They fail to reproduce increasing optical depth with lower tropospheric stability as observed. These results suggest sufficiently account effect small-scale spatial heterogeneity in properties or variety types at grid scale

The ’too few, too bright’ tropical low-cloud problem in CMIP5 models

[1] Previous generations of climate models have been shown to under-estimate the occurrence of tropical low-level clouds and to over-estimate their radiative effects. This study analyzes outputs frommultiple climate models participating in the Fifth phase of the CoupledModel Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) using the Cloud Feedback Model Intercomparison Project Observations Simulator Package (CO...

Too few doctors--or too many?

THIS conclusion has led the Royal Commission to recommend doubling the existing numbers of doctors within the next 30 years. This is an expensive proposal that is likely to add many millions of pounds to the annual budget of the nation. It requires careful examination. Estimates of medical manpower requirements are fraught with difficulties and hazards. The proposals of the Willink Committee (1...

[Too many or too few cardiologists?].

116 Cardiology has undergone explosive growth in recent years. This has been attributed to a series of factors, especially to scientific and technological advances, greater opportunities for the adequate treatment of many cardiovascular disorders and the growing public awareness of the magnitude of the problem created by these diseases. Moreover, the public has access to increasing amounts of i...
